Linux novice question

I'm a real linux novice, so I'm not really familiar with some of the software included with Coova.
I'm trying to setup a wifi hotspot for a friend who has a coffee shop. We'd like to make it easy to admin as it's a one person operation. My friend would like it setup so that users would be required to login before using it (even though it'll be free). Is it possible to either to setup an auth mechanism on the router or are there free auth providers that can be used. I did happen across http://www.nycwireless.net" target="_blank which provides wifidog auth services for NYC. Do you know any national or local ones in the Philadelphia area? Thanx for your help.

Re: Linux novice question

if your looking for auth system, theres http://www.worldspot.net
its free for FREE HOTSPOTS
very simple and works great

give it a try

Re: Linux novice question

btw, CoovaAP 1.0-beta.3 has been released... checkout the "Internal HotSpot" option

Re: Linux novice question

The next version of the firmware will have a simple, yet customizable in the web admin console, embedded captive portal. If you are interested in helping test the firmware, let me know! Otherwise, keep an eye out for 1.0-beta.3.

Re: Linux novice question

That would be good...and possibly and IFrame or a referal mechanism to an interal or external web page. The friend I'm putting this together for already has a web site hosted somewhere.

Re: Linux novice question

Are you both just wanting a super-simple login page with local accounts?

Re: Linux novice question

Your project sounds just like what I'm trying to do (except I don't expect to see more than 5 concurrent users). What backend are you planning to use? ...and just as importantly, how much space will it take up? As I said previous, I have a WRT54GS v.4 router. Do you know of any backend small enough that I could use. I'm beginning to think I may need a different router. Do you you have any feel for how much space your setup will require? I realize it's not really a concern for your setup.

Re: Linux novice question

I am also interested in putting everything on the same device, because my needs are small, about 15 people max at one time, and maybe 40 in total. So this shouldn't require a major backend system. I bought the WRTSL54GS which has a USB port. I added a 2GB SD Card and mounted that partition into /usr/local where I'll add the parts and pieces I need to make everything work.

Re: Linux novice question

Thanx for your reply. Self contained would be ideal. I'm planning on using a WRT54GS v.4 router which has 16 MB RAM/4MB ROM. I've already installed Coova on it. Wifidog seems like a nice choice because of the splash page/login screen. I'm guessing that there's not enough room to install the Wifidog auth server/portal on the router too. Although I could be wrong about that. I generally deal with the MS Windows world where all apps are large. Do you have any suggestions? I'm kind of thinking that I'm going to need to plug an old PC into the router configured as the Wifidog auth server...

Re: Linux novice question

I would suggest wifidog or a simple login script for chillispot. Are you looking for something completely self contained?
