Personal Edition FAQ

So I'll be the guy that sits up the front of the class and asks the stupid questions...

Even better, since no one wants to talk I'll even talk to myself or the computer (read Google or Wikipedia etc. ) from time to time.

What is a one-time-password module? What does it do?
Thank-you Wikipedia for giving me the answer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-time_password)

Can "Personal Edition" and CoovaChilli be installed in the one wireless router (e.g. wrt54GL or Accton)?

I'm getting old and I hope to see Personal Edition before I die/go senile. Can I expect to see "Personal Edition" within the next two years?

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

David: Gargoyle is getting close to including a really useful data limit feature: http://www.gargoyle-router.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=174#p791.
Would you consider including something similar for Personal Edition?

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

Having CoovaRADIUS running away from the edge makes sense since this would be lessen the burden for a device installed at the edge.
However I would suggest that for small networks (e.g. Household networks) it would be less costly to support common shared services if everything was in the one device.
Has Coova considered partnering with http://www.untangle.com/Partners/Technology?
Untangle's basic free package includes a Web Filter that is attractive to many families. Chilli would make it more attractive. Some would even be prepared to pay for a commercial CoovaRADIUS add-on. I know I would.

PS. I'm not the first to come up with this idea. See:http://forums.untangle.com/networking/713-intergrate-free-radius-chillispot-captive-portal.html

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

It is certainly not a requirement that CoovaChilli be running on the same box as CoovaRADIUS. In fact, for most situations, it isn't even recommended. Chilli should run as close to the "edge" as possible - preferably in the router itself. CoovaRADIUS should run somewhere more central to your network -- perhaps on the same machine as the captive portal (Drupal running the Hotspot module, for instance).

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

Since Personal Edition requires Coova-chilli to be dedicated to a single client device and since a Windows version of Personal Edition is being developed, has any consideration be given to porting Coova-chilli to Windows?
It seems pointless to have a separate box running Coova-chilli when it is dedicated to single box running Personal Edition.

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

You have we my apetite for the Connercial Edition!

Is there a way to see this in action? A online demo perhaps?

For the Personal/Community editions we can set upload/dowload limits per user using policies correct?

Any instructions on how I will create a user with a 10GB data cap, 30 day access and an upload download speed of 1024/128 Kbits?

Would the procedure be the same in the Commercial version? OR will it have an attribute set under each user that we can configure eg:

Username: *****
Password:******
User ID: eg: 1ABC123
Personal Details fields: (name, surname ect ect )
Usage Period: (eg: 30 Days)
Max Download Speed: ** Kbits
Max Upload Speed: ** Kbits
DataCap (total in+total out): **Mbytes
Start Date: 15Dec 2008
Expiry Date: 15 Jan 2009
Monthly AP client: (yes/no) -- here you can use a script that accepts csv files to automatically check and update the users account against his user ID when the new month starts.

I am testing the Personal edition here in my flat in anticipation for the Commercial release and would like to get to grips with it early on.

Any info or a Demo login would be great!

Kind Regards,
Arno

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

Yes, the higher level editions support these features. You can configure 'access policies' whereby you limit time and/or data limitations. Bandwidth limitations are also possible - even in the personal edition. Once you have access policies defined, you can then configure users with (or without) a policy and generate access codes under a policy - which can be sold on-line or in printed voucher form.

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

Hi there.

Will the Community and Commercial editions support voucher printing?
Also in New Zealand our data charges are expensive and we have monthly data caps and speeds imposed on us.

Will the commercial edition support monthly user data caps and up/down bandwidth settings?

The reason I ask is that we run a wisp and are interested in the commercial edition and have re-occuring monthly users who do automatic paymnets and ad-hoc voucher users who purchase 30 Day 10Gb vouchers from us.

Otherwise congrats on the Personal Edition release! set it up to play with it and its a great one stop solution for home use :)

Kind Regards,
Arno

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

Congradulations David. Thanks for making this free for non-commercial applications. Thanks also for the instructions on installing Drupal etc.

Personal edition released:

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

Decided to go with the all-in-one box idea. I'll be posting updates from time to time here: http://coova.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1112

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

Yes I'd be interested in being a pre-release tester. However I'm having trouble deciding whether to implement an it as an all-in-one box plus CAP or whether to have Drupal hosted on the internet.
I understand that as far as CoovaChilli is concerned CAP will be for the exclusive use of the PC running Personal Edition. Is that correct?
If I go with the all-in-one box implementation (i.e. including Drupal) and put the IP address for this box in the walled garden list of the associated CAP would other PCs be able to access Drupal via the CAP?

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

Interested in being a pre-release tester?

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

It'll keep records separate by the user, yes. If they login and share the computer without logging out, then there is little one can do about that...

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

PCs are often shared by a number of users. Can Personal Edition keep separate records for each user in these situations?

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

If you charge for software then customer's support expectations become onerous.
I noticed that when Meraki raised the price for their base product the first thing they did was to take the links to their forums off their web site.
If you did decide to charge for Personal Edition would you support it in these forums?

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

Have you considered giving "Personal Edition" read only access to user specific data in the other editions of CoovaRADIUS?

Re: Personal Edition FAQ

No, CoovaRADIUS is not designed to run on a router. Rather, it runs on any PC with windows, mac, or unix.

By one-time password module, I mean a JRadius handler that will authenticate randomly generated username/password codes that were created using an API. This module will be integrated with the Drupal hotspot module such that access can be provisioned from the Drupal code.
